How restaurants rank on Google Maps
Nobody outside Google knows the exact formula, and anyone promising "#1 on Maps" is guessing. What Google does publish is the three factors: relevance, distance and prominence.
Paste your restaurant's Google Maps link and get a PDF within 24 h: profile completeness score, how many negative reviews have no reply, the most repeated complaints with real quotes, and 10 fixes in priority order. One-off €19.
·
Relevance
- Precise primary category and accurate secondary ones.
- Description mentioning cuisine, signature dishes and neighbourhood.
- Menu link, attributes (vegan, terrace, accessibility) and photos of real dishes.
Prominence
- Steady flow of recent reviews, and replies to them.
- Consistent name, address and phone across your website and directories.
- Mentions on local press, guides and your own website.
Distance
You can't change it, but correct pin placement and an accurate address matter, especially in dense old towns.
Checklist
- Claim and verify the profile at business.google.com. Without verification you can't reply to reviews or fix details.
- Use the most specific primary category ("Tapas restaurant", not just "Restaurant") plus 2-4 accurate secondary ones.
- Complete opening hours, including holidays and seasonal closures. Wrong hours produce 1★ reviews from people who found the door closed.
- Add menu and booking links. Google shows "Menu" and "Reserve" buttons when you fill them in.
- Write a 600-750 character description: cuisine, signature dishes, neighbourhood, and which languages your menu is in.
- Fresh photos: the façade (so people recognise you), interior, 10-15 real dishes and the menu.
- Attributes: outdoor seating, vegan/gluten-free options, accessibility, card payments, wifi.
- Reply to reviews, especially 1-3★ ones, in the guest's language, within 48 hours.
- Post an update (daily menu, event, seasonal dish) every 2 weeks.
- Keep name, address and phone identical on Google, your website, TheFork, Tripadvisor and social profiles.
